Resources

Synonyms: strength, capacity, potential, ability, support, assistance, resource, value, supply

What is a resource? Quite simply: a resource is a protective factor.

Just like sunscreen protects us from sunburn, resources help us cope with psychological stress. Because just like we cannot avoid the sun entirely, we also can't fully escape challenges and stress. In fact, we need a healthy balance between tension and relaxation to maintain our inner equilibrium.

Resources play a crucial role in making difficult life phases and challenging situations manageable.
They are the sources of strength that empower and make us more resilient.

Why are resources so important?

Because they are the raw material for personal growth, development, and change!
Our resources are the foundation upon which we achieve goals, overcome obstacles, and improve our quality of life. That’s why discovering, strengthening, and consciously using resources is a central focus in coaching and counseling. Often, we possess far more internal and external resources than we are aware of — and that’s exactly where we begin!

What types of resources are there?

⬧ Personal resources – Creativity, resilience, time management, communication skills
⬧ Social resources – Family, friends, colleagues, supportive networks
⬧ Cognitive resources – Analytical thinking, self-reflection, decision-making ability
⬧ Physical resources – Financial security, housing, access to healthcare
⬧ Emotional resources – Positive self-perception, coping strategies, inner stability

Identifying and activating these resources is a natural part of the counseling process — as natural as candles on a birthday cake!

Resources in relationships

Stable and fulfilling relationships are based on the ability to recognize and utilize both individual and shared resources. These may include emotional support, trust, or shared values.
When we become aware of our social resources, we can strengthen relationships, better navigate conflicts, and foster deeper connections.

Resources and health

Our mental and physical health are greatly influenced by resources — whether it's resilience, self-care, or a supportive environment. When we are aware of our resources, we can manage stress more effectively, activate energy reserves, and sustainably enhance our well-being.

Resources in personal development

Personal growth means realizing and unfolding your full potential. This requires resources like self-confidence, willingness to learn, and inner stability. When we recognize and actively use our strengths, we are better equipped to face new challenges, make courageous decisions, and grow as individuals.
